Two questions decide most of it. First, where will it live? An outdoor camera needs weatherproofing and either a battery, a solar panel or a cable; an indoor camera usually just plugs in. Second, where does the video go? Some listings say SD card, some say cloud, and some say both while the spec table says neither. A camera you can’t review footage on isn’t much use, so this is the first thing I’d confirm.

A camera is a device that records people. Please read this part before you order anything on this page.
- Know your local rules. AliExpress itself notes on camera listings that camera products may only be used for purposes permitted by the laws and regulations of your country or area. Rules on filming public spaces, neighbours’ property, guests and audio recording differ a lot from place to place, so check yours.
- Point it only at your own property. Avoid capturing neighbours’ windows or gardens, and if you record audio or have visitors or staff at home, check whether you must tell them.
- Secure the account. Use a unique password, turn on two-step sign-in if the app offers it, and keep the app and firmware updated. Cheap cameras are a common target when passwords are reused.
- Don’t use one for private spaces. Bedrooms, bathrooms and changing areas are not places for a camera aimed at other people.
- Check where the video is stored — on a card, in the seller’s cloud, or both — and read the app’s privacy policy. I haven’t checked the apps of these three.
- Battery and solar cameras need a charge plan. Winter, shade and heavy motion alerts can drain a battery faster than a listing suggests.

5 Things to Avoid When Buying
- Trusting the resolution in the title. Compare it with the spec table and the listing image.
- Assuming there’s no subscription. Check what the app gives you for free and what it charges for.
- Buying the wrong variant or plug. Several listings sell EU and US plugs, single and multi-packs, with and without a card.
- Ignoring the Wi-Fi band. 2.4 GHz-only cameras won’t join a 5 GHz-only network.
- Reusing an old password for the camera app. Give it its own password and turn on two-step sign-in.
