LiPo Battery Storage and Charging Safety for FPV and RC

LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries power most FPV drones and RC models. They hold a lot of energy in a small package, and mishandling them can cause fires. These are the widely recommended habits.

Storage

  • Store LiPos at “storage voltage”, about 3.8V per cell, not fully charged or fully empty. Most smart chargers have a storage mode.
  • Keep them in a cool, dry place away from flammable objects.
  • Use a fire-resistant LiPo bag or a metal ammo box.

Charging

  • Use a proper LiPo balance charger, not a random USB charger.
  • Set the right cell count and charge current for the battery.
  • Never leave a charging LiPo unattended, and charge on a non-flammable surface, ideally in a LiPo bag.
  • Let a hot battery cool before charging it after a flight.

Puffy or Damaged Batteries

A puffy, punctured, hot or dented LiPo should be retired, not used. Do not charge it. Discharge it safely using a method recommended for your battery, and take it to a battery recycling point.

Transport

Carry LiPos in a protective bag, and check airline rules if you fly with them.

Extend Battery Life

Do not over-discharge in flight, and avoid leaving them fully charged for days.
