FPV Drone Not Binding to the Controller? How to Fix It

When an FPV drone will not bind, the radio (transmitter) and the receiver in the drone are not paired. The procedure differs by radio system, so use the manual for your specific kit, but the same causes come up over and over.

Safety First: Remove the Props

Take the propellers off whenever you bind or test the motors on the bench. A drone that unexpectedly spins up with props on can injure you.

1. Check the Protocols Match

The radio and the receiver must use the same protocol. Common ones include ExpressLRS, FrSky, Crossfire and the proprietary systems bundled with ready-to-fly kits. A radio set to one protocol will never bind with a receiver using another. Check the radio’s settings and the drone’s specifications.

2. Use the Right Bind Procedure

Most receivers are put into bind mode either with a small bind button held while powering up, or with a power-cycle sequence. ExpressLRS setups often use a shared “bind phrase” instead of a button. The exact steps depend on the receiver, so follow your kit’s instructions.

3. Watch the Receiver LED

The receiver LED changes pattern when it is in bind mode and again when it has connected. If it never changes, the receiver may not be getting power.

4. Match Firmware Versions

With some systems (ExpressLRS in particular), the radio module and receiver must be on compatible firmware versions. Update them together.

5. Check the Receiver Tab in the Flight Software

After binding, open the receiver tab in Betaflight (or your flight software), move the sticks and check that the channel bars respond. If the bars do not move, the drone is bound but the receiver is not configured correctly.

6. Check Power and Range

A low battery or a receiver too close to the transmitter antenna can cause issues. Bind at a normal distance of a metre or two.

7. Check Failsafe

Before flying, confirm what the drone does when the signal drops, and test it with props off.
