An SSD that does not appear is either not detected by the computer at all, or detected but not set up yet. The steps below start with the quickest checks.
A New SSD Is Often Not Set Up
A brand-new drive usually needs to be initialized and formatted before it shows up in File Explorer:
- Right-click the Start button and open Disk Management.
- If the drive appears as “Not initialized”, right-click it and choose Initialize Disk (GPT is the usual choice for modern PCs).
- Right-click the unallocated space, choose New Simple Volume and follow the steps. This erases anything on the drive, so do this only for a new or empty one.
If the Drive Does Not Appear in Disk Management
- Check the BIOS/UEFI. Restart and enter the BIOS. If the drive is not listed there either, the computer does not detect it.
- Reseat the drive. Power off, unplug, and reseat an M.2 drive in its slot, or check the cable and power connectors of a 2.5-inch SATA drive.
- Check the slot type. Some M.2 slots support only NVMe, some only SATA. Your motherboard manual shows which.
- Check for shared lanes. On some boards, using one M.2 slot disables certain SATA ports.
- Try another cable, port or slot to rule out faulty parts.
Drive Shows Up But Has No Letter
In Disk Management, right-click the volume, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, and assign a letter.
External SSD Enclosures
For an SSD in an external enclosure, try another USB cable and port, and check that the enclosure supports the drive type (SATA or NVMe). Plug it directly into the computer, not through a hub.
Update Drivers and BIOS
Update the chipset and storage drivers, and the motherboard BIOS if your board needs it to support the drive.
