Car Charger Not Charging Your Phone? 7 Fixes

When a car charger does not charge your phone, the problem is the socket, the charger or the cable. Test them in this order.

1. Check the Socket Has Power

Try another device in the 12V socket. In many cars the socket only works with the ignition on.

2. Check the Fuse

If the socket is dead, the fuse for it may be blown. Your owner’s manual shows which fuse it is. Replace it with the same rating.

3. Push the Charger In Fully

A loose fit is a common cause. Push the charger fully into the socket, and check its indicator light.

4. Try a Different Cable

Cables fail more often than chargers.

5. Check the Charger’s Power

A weak charger charges slowly, or not at all if the phone is in heavy use with navigation and a bright screen. Use a charger with enough output for your phone.

6. Clean the Ports

Dust and lint in the phone’s port can block contact.

7. Check Heat

A phone in the sun running navigation can stop charging to protect the battery. Move it out of direct sun.
