USB-C Cable Not Charging? Why Some Cables Only Work for Data (and What to Do)

A USB-C cable that does not charge can be faulty, but it is often simply the wrong type of cable for the job. Here is how to find out.

1. It Might Be a Data-Only or Low-Power Cable

Not every USB-C cable carries the same power. Some are made for data and slow charging only, and many cannot carry the higher wattage that laptops need. Use a cable rated for the wattage you need.

2. Match the Cable, Charger and Device

Charging speed is set by the weakest part: the charger, the cable or the device. A 100W laptop charger with a low-power cable will not charge a laptop properly.

3. Check the Charger

Try the cable with another charger, and another cable with the same charger, to work out which part is at fault.

4. Clean the Port

Lint in the device’s USB-C port can stop the cable seating fully. With the device off, gently clean it with a wooden or plastic toothpick.

5. Try Another Device

If the cable works on another phone, the problem is your device’s port. If it fails everywhere, replace the cable.

6. Restart the Device

A software glitch can stop charging from starting. Restart and try again.

7. Beware of Bent or Loose Plugs

If the plug wiggles or the cable only works at certain angles, the cable or port is worn out.
