Gaming Headset Mic Not Working on PC? 8 Fixes

If a gaming headset’s microphone does not work on a PC, the fix is usually a setting or a plug, not a broken mic. Work through this list.

1. Check the Physical Mute

Many headsets have a mute switch on the cable, the earcup or the boom mic. Make sure it is off, and make sure the boom is fully lowered if it is a flip-to-mute type.

2. Check the Plug Type

A single 3.5mm plug that carries both audio and mic (TRRS) works on phones and consoles but not on many PC sound cards, which have separate mic and headphone sockets. If your PC has two jacks, use a splitter adapter, or use a USB headset.

3. Allow Microphone Access in Windows

In Windows Settings, go to Privacy and Security, then Microphone, and make sure microphone access is on for your apps.

4. Set the Headset as the Default Input

In Sound settings, choose your headset under Input, make sure it is not disabled, and turn the input volume up. Speak and watch the level bar.

5. Check the App Settings

Discord, Teams and games each have their own input device selection. Make sure the headset is selected there too.

6. Try Another Port and Restart

Try a different USB or audio port and restart the PC.

7. Update or Reinstall Drivers

Update audio drivers and the headset’s software, if it has any.

8. Test on Another Device

Plug the headset into a phone or another PC. If the mic still fails, the headset is faulty.
