Smartwatch Not Syncing, Not Notifying or Draining Fast? Fixes

Most smartwatch problems (not syncing, missing notifications, fast battery drain) come from the connection between the watch and the phone. Try these fixes in order, since the first ones take under a minute.

1. Check the Basics

  • Bluetooth is on, on both the phone and the watch.
  • The watch is within a few metres of the phone.
  • Airplane mode is off, and Do Not Disturb is not silencing notifications.
  • The companion app is installed and up to date.

2. Let the App Run in the Background

On Android especially, battery-saving features can close the watch app in the background, which stops syncing and notifications. Set the app’s battery use to “unrestricted” (the wording differs by phone) and allow background activity. On iPhone, keep Background App Refresh on for the watch app.

3. Give the App Notification Access

Notifications only reach the watch if the companion app has permission to read them. Grant notification access in the phone settings, then choose which apps are allowed inside the watch app.

4. Re-Pair the Watch

Remove (forget) the watch from your phone’s Bluetooth list, unpair it inside the companion app, restart both devices, and pair again. This fixes most stubborn sync problems.

5. Update Firmware

Update the watch and the app. Many sync and battery bugs are fixed in firmware updates.

Why the Battery Drains Fast

  • Bright screen or always-on display: the biggest drains on most watches.
  • Continuous heart-rate or blood-oxygen tracking: reduce how often it measures.
  • Built-in GPS: long workouts with GPS on use a lot of power.
  • Constant notifications: each one wakes the screen.
  • A weak Bluetooth connection: the watch keeps trying to reconnect, which drains power.

Smartwatch Won’t Charge

  • Clean the charging contacts on the watch and the charger with a dry cloth.
  • Line up the charger exactly, especially with magnetic chargers.
  • Use a simple 5V USB adapter and the original cable.
  • If the battery is completely flat, leave it on the charger for 15 to 30 minutes before expecting a response.
